I live about 25 miles from downtown Austin and was concerned that FM reception could be a challenge. Out here in the Central Texas Hill Country, there is a tall ridge between my house and the local FM transmitter sites. In the past, this has proven to be problematic, with borderline to poor signal strength with my other radios that have internal antennas or antennas mounted indoors. A few words about the included external antenna: I mounted the wire dipole antenna outside at only 8 feet elevation from the ground in a vertical orientation (broadcast FM signals are vertically polarized). For a single element antenna, it works quite well. I get adequate signal strength (with FM, it's usually "all or nothing" due to a phenomenon known as "capture effect") with no fading or flutter on every station in the area that I care about. Mounting the antenna vertically results in several dB of "gain" compared to horizontal orientaion, due to the vertical polarization of transmitted FM broadcast signals. Vertical antennas also give an omni-directional reception advantage compared to mounting the wire horizontally (which tends to reduce signal strength considerably from stations coming off the "ends" of the wire). This applies to AM as well as FM signals. The sound quality with this HD FM radio is spectacular. It is better than that from many of my CDs played through a CD player with an outboard DSP and high-end vacuum tube power amp. Clearly, HD FM stations emit signals with more musical detail and "depth" than non-HD FM stations. But even the non-HD stations sound very good. I am totally happy with the Sony HD radio tuner and recommend it highly.

While I am able to pull in my favorite stations, I am not able to get more distant ones. For the price, however, it is excellent.

This unit has a lot of capability from pulling in weak analog and digital stations to the extensive pre-set selections. Mine is used to supply radio into a house sound system.
