The HDMI connection passes both video and audio through to the TV HDMI input, which is great. The setup takes some time but is straight forward. This is a very good surround sound system for the money (I paid just over $500 for it). I didn't notice much of an improvement in picture quality from the upconverting function, but it is still nice to pass everything through one cable to the TV.

After extensive research I decided the Onkyo 6100 was for me due to the positive reviews and what it offered. However, after setup I was a bit disapointed with the sound it put out. Not the quality but the amount,[...]. Anyway, my old 400 watt Phillips brand HTIB rivals this unit for sound output. Also it lacks a few things that my cheaper system had and I didn't think to ask about because I thought they would be standard. Like a subwoofer output control on the remote, it has a gain on the sub box, but it gets a little old walking back and forth to dial it in for one part of the movie just to lower it again for other parts, it is also easily overworked and distorts at over half gain. This unit does not interface well with harmony remotes, I'm still using two remotes while getting the bugs out. Also don't buy for the supposed upconversion to HD, I found better quality by running my PS3 directly to the TV. The speakers are very large for surrounds and are extremely easily scratched. I would recommend this system to a friend only if they didn't plan on watching action movies or listening to music at high volumes.

Easy to set up, but read the manual to understand what a great value this package really is. In my early years as an electronics engineer/budding audiophile, I could only dream of what the Audyssey system calibration is capable of doing in just a few minutes! The end-result sound experience is a HUGE step-up from typical Home-Theater-In-A-Box oferings. Buy this system! You will NOT be dissappointed, now, or in the future, as the system can be easily upgraded.

Great Product for low end Surround Sound

Thundering Bass, Easy To Setup
Best Uses:
Surround Sound Solution, Television Shows
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

I've never owned a surround sound system before, but all of my buddies swear by them. I was originally looking at your typical Best Buy surround sound setups, where you end up with Sh **ty speakers and a DVD player. Now that I own this system, I can guarantee that Surround is a necessity and this system won't let you down. The receiver alone is worth the purchase. Four HDMI inputs and no pass through bs. The only knock I have is that the speakers are big, but they sound great to me. The sub is a little bit inaccurate, but I can't complain. I love this system for both the quality and the price. I could have paid 3/4s of what I did just for the receiver.
