TRILUMINOS® RGB Dynamic LED Backlight
TRILUMINOS® RGB LED backlight technology aligns individual clusters of red, green, and blue LEDs to produce a significantly higher purity of primary colors than single white LED backlights, resulting in more accurate color reproduction. This clustered arrangement also allows the XBR®8 to adjust the brightness of the backlight in units of small blocks, so it can display deep blacks in one portion of the screen and bright whites in another, producing images with enhanced depth, three-dimensionality and exceptionally accurate shadow detail. And, because it uses LEDs rather than the fluorescent tubes found in many HDTVs, the TRILUMINOS® RGB Dynamic LED backlight also promises exceptionally long life.

BRAVIA Engine™ 2 PRO is Sony’s most advanced video processing system, utilizing the latest generation of Digital Reality Creation technology to render a supremely sharp, crystal clear image from any video resolution.

Motionflow™ 120Hz PRO technology
Motionflow™ 120Hz PRO technology couples a high 120Hz frame rate with sequential scanning technology, which controls the backlight to horizontally divide frames and reduce visual flickering. The combination of high frame rate and sequential scanning significantly reduces source image blur and judder in film sources, HD content, broadcast movies, and primetime programming, and helps create smoother, more fluid motion for a natural and realistic viewing experience.

10-bit processor / 10-bit panel
The BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series HDTV combines a 10-bit processor and 10-bit panel to create and display billions of colors. Sony has produced a great LCD TV. The Triluminous technology is a clear step forward for LCD picture quality. The unfortunate result is a great TV at a price point that many people will not be able to afford. Even now 18 months after introduction this set is still selling new above the price points of the two succeeding XBR (9 and amp; 10) models. During my shopping efforts I had the opportunity to view this LCD side-by-side with a competing plasma and was convinced that the XBR8 can achieve black levels on par with "reference" plasmas. For those tech enthusiasts out there, I dropped in a HD video benchmark Blu-ray disc and to my surprise the test patterns were at ideal levels/setting out of the box when picture was set to "Cinema". If you want to tweak any of the picture settings, you will find a plethora of video adjustment options in the settings menu. This should provide the flexibility to accommodate the needs of even the most discerning viewers. The HDMI CEC connectivity (which Sony has branded BRAVIA Sync), is a convenient feature that enables you to network your HDMI devices together. Mostly it avoids having to individually power on each device or fiddle with input settings when going from TV to Blu-ray. The only real drawback is the limited on-line internet functionality. If connected to a TIVOHD you will have an an alternative to access online content (Netflix, Youtube, etc.) that the XBR8 otherwise wouldn't. For those who can get their hands on one of these units and afford the price you will be pleased with this LCD.
