Panasonic TC-P54V10

Spent a lot of time looking at Samsung, LG and Panasonic. I eliminated LCDs from the race despite the lower energy costs because of the supposed better viewing angle and smoother picture of the plasma. Also LED LCDs were rated as only marginally better than plain LCDs and certainly priced a lot higher than non LED LCDs. My primary use of the plasma is for movies and secondarily college football. The kids use it for general kids cable shows but they got no vote on this purchase. I hooked the tv up to an HD antenna and am getting over the air HD signals for the local stations. They look wonderful. I have not yet stepped up to the HD box for Direct TV...We use Direct TV for cable and the kids have not complained about the noticeably poorer picture quality of standard digital satellite service (poorer as compared to the former non-HD rear projection Sony XBR that the Panasonic replaced). Set up is a breeze. Easy to set up a VCR, satellite TV and Blu Ray player (LG BD390 - love the streaming Netflix movies and some are even in HD). Easy to customize the names of the input devices (e.g. "Blu Ray" instead of "Comp 1"). This makes it easier for the non techies in the family to pick the right input device. Also easy to turn off the non local HD over the air stations so that when you use the channel selector, it just stops at the handful of stations rather than going 1 to 2 to 3, etc. I also have hooked it up to the internet through a wired connection. The YouTube and Weather and Bloomberg are nice widgets but were not a deciding factor in the purchase and probably won't get much use. Perhaps as Panasonic adds widgets, that aspect will be more compelling. The main reason for the purchase was the wonderful reviews of the picture quality and that has proven the case. Just received my TC-P54V10. WoW is the best description. THX display is outstanding right out of box. Used the CNET calibration and adjustment using the Spears and amp; Munsil Blu-ray calibration DVD to tune settings. Picture is even more outstanding. TV is connedted to my 805 Onkyo Reciver with audio out to receiver. Vira Link though not advertised identified my reciver and Dish V222 Reciver when turning remote on / off. A nice plus. Bottom line — based on my experience the last few weeks — the TC-P54V10 is more than worth the extra few bucks. [...]

Standard picture mode works for the normal channels. Need to do custom setting for Blue Ray movies to get the best picture. The You Tube, Picasa integration is very useful.

Picture is amazing blacks are very black . Carefully what size you buy bigger isn't always better. It's very afordable for it's quality . The colors on this tv are vivid and and cleAr as they can be. This tv is more for the hard core user who appreciates the full mOvie experience. Better with a surround sound system.

This TV is great. Simple setup and looks great with the one sheet of glass. Have no image issues, other then I have a non-HD cable feed, but Blu-ray looks great. I'm not big on nitpicking things, so sound is fine for what you get out of the TV speakers, but I use a 5.1 set-up with a Onkyo reciever. Bottom, line its expensive, but for the beauty and size it is great. Vieracast is fun to mess around with, too and the Amazon on demand is a nice feature. Highly reccomend.
