Typical Marantz high quality
By Red Verified Buyer from Palm Coast, FL on 11/9/2009
Pros:
High Quality Picture, Consistent Performance, Attractive Design, Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use
Cons:
No optical audio out
Best Uses:
Bedroom, Home, Dorm Room
Describe Yourself:
Casual User
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After owning a Denon DVD player and hating it, I purchased this unit because of Marantz reputation and also because I own a Marantz integrated amplifier which I absolutely love. This unit outperforms the Denon hands down. I couldn't be happier except for the lack of an optical audio out and the inability to use HDMI out and coaxial digital out simultaneously. You can't beat the 3 year warranty, the price, and the performance of this unit. It gets a thumbs up.

Good performance for price
By happy owner Verified Buyer from Houston, TX on 10/27/2009
Pros:
Easy To Use, High Quality Picture
Cons:
Flimsy Construction
Best Uses:
Home, Dorm Room
Describe Yourself:
Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

For [$], this is a great product. With the original [$] price tag and the Marantz name I was expecting sturdier construction. The back plate flexes when input connections are made, and there is some audible noise from the spinning disk. The noise is only discernible when next to the unit. The picture quality (up converting to 32" 720P) and the sound quality (connected to NAD pre-amp, Class D amplifier, and Polk RTi4) are excellent.

Mixed Bag
By Davis Verified Buyer from India on 10/15/2009
Pros:
Easy To Set Up
Best Uses:
Home
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Does not remember where a disc was stopped in case you want to watch a movie in a staggered manner. Also does not have the fast forward and Reverse buttons. It also inexplicably switches into standby mode if paused for a longer time and then you have to start watching the movie from the beginning of the disc! Pretty irritating that coming from a Marantz. Audio is a little dull at the higher end of the spectrum (surprising as it is a Marantz and the unit comes with an audio only mode)needs a tone control or an equalizer to boost high frequencies. Have not tried the up conversion as yet - somewhat disappointed in my purchase of this item which is connected to a Kenwood integrated amp and JBL speakers. On the positive side the quality of construction is very good and it plays both PAL and NTSC discs. The response time is not too bad either.

Build quality is good and this unit plays both PAL and NTSC discs. The audio may need a high frequency boost for some users who are used to very clear highs. Audio base is excellent. Have not tested the upconversion but am sure it is standard Marantz quality which is superb. All in a ll a very good value for money.
