Digital Camcorder Format Guide at OneCall

Canon Camcorder

When it comes to digital video, more recording format options are available than ever before for aspiring filmmakers and family picnic-shooters alike. In general, the format you choose will play a role in the size and feature-set of the camera, as well as the price. Also, keep in mind that some formats offer better compatibility with popular video editing software than others.

MiniDV Pros Cons
Tapes widely available. Used in broad range of basic and advanced cameras. Fewer ultra-compact designs due to tape size.
Highest video resolution and quality in the consumer video range. Footage must be captured to computer in ""real-time"" for editing.
CD-quality audio.
Great compatibility with video editing software.
Sony Camcorder

Digital8 Pros Cons
Can record digital video to inexpensive analog 8mm or Hi8 tapes. Cameras very affordable. Camera chassis must be larger to accomodate larger tape size than MiniDV.
Offers same audio and video quality, and same video editing compatibility, as MiniDV. Few models available (Sony is only manufacturer).
Cameras can play back 8mm and Hi8 tapes.

Mini DVD-R Pros Cons

Easy, fast access to video segments and still images; DVD-R discs can be played on home DVD players. Records in MPEG-2, which is slightly lower quality than MiniDV.
Variable video quality settings allow more control over recording length. Recording time is short on highest quality setting.
Discs are durable and long-lasting. Limited compatibility with video editing software.

Samsung Camcorder

Flash Memory/Hard Drive Pros Cons
Removeable flash media or embedded hard drive allows for very compact designs. Cameras record in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or MPEG-4, all of which are lower quality than MiniDV.
Easy, fast access to video segments and still images. Comparatively short recording times except with the more expensive hard drive units.
Low-bandwidth MPEG recording formats great for Web site or email use. Limited compatibility with video editing software.

MicroMV Pros Cons
Small tapes allow for very compact cameras. Records in MPEG-2, which is slightly lower quality than MiniDV.
Built-in memory chip allows for indexing and quick access to video segments. Few models available (Sony is only manufacturer).
Limited compatibility with video editing software.

Hi8 Pros Cons
Higher-than-VHS quality. Footage must be digitized before you can edit or share footage via your computer.
Extremely affordable cameras and tapes. Older, analog standard that is being gradually phased out.
