The best 50-inch Plasma display

There is no better product for this price. I am waiting for the 60" version to go on sale to buy a second unit. The LG brand is high tech at the right price. [...]

About Me Power User
This TV is great, it is very bright and vibrant (with power saving off), a colorful movie like Wall-E Really pops on Bluray, it looks beautiful. THX mode is nice. Doesn't get too hot, (so you know it is more energy efficient) I am a pessimistic guy, I will focus on my two gripes, assume everything else is A+ based on omission. (And it is!)The main issue with the picture quality is in rendering dark grays, (Not blacks) Blacks are very dark, However the bit depth of the TV makes dark greys and other very dark colors fuzzy, the TV runs a dithering process on dark greys which is visible at less than 12 feet. (Dithering is a process of dancing pixels quickly around in random circles and turning them on and off to make a color darker than the lit pixel really is, This preys on your inability to see a single pixel of a 1080P picture at range for a split second.) If you have 20/20 or greater than 20/20 and sit within 1-15 feet of your TV, you will see it, especially in dark black and white classics. (This is not film grain! This is a digital algorithm to make up for the fact that a single TV pixel cannot show the whole spectrum of light at all brightnesses)The other main problem is image retention, I have run this TV heavily for a month and it still sucks up image retention like a camel, pause icons are burnt in in 2 minutes, and stay for an hour. They always go away, but having IR be a constant concern is undesirable when you go to the bathroom. I play video games and my health bar gets burnt in, if we watch a movie after you can see I had 125 health. Or in really wide screen or full screen movies, the black bars can be visible in other sources.I'm not saying not to buy this TV, just that these are the main drawbacks of this TV and other TVs may be no better, I love my TV, I feel the price is a steal, but if dark colors at close ranges and using your TV to display static images is important to you, it is something to consider (Possibly an LCD). If you just want an HDTV for movies, add this to your cart already, you wont regret this one.Great for new vibrant colorful movies, mediocre for dark film-noir black and white classics, Poor for use as a PC Monitor despite the VGA connection.
A GREAT BARGAIN

Grteat picture - great value

The LG 50PS60 is my first flat panel TV purchase. I'm very happy with it. I don't use the THX Cinema setting, instead I've modified the standard setting to my liking - though black is not as black as when it is off. I can't seem to achieve that, but as a novice I'm not sure if that's a reasonable goal. One small nit - sometimes I find the TV has changed itself from the standard setting to something else, like THX or Vivid. I think this happens if I toggle around too much in the TV menu, but I'm not sure what triggers this changing. This TV has an auto-brightness feature that evaluates the room brightness and adjusts the picture accordingly. Lower brightness reduces power consumption on a plasma.I'm driving this display with a DirecTV HD DVR and a Panasonic DVD recorder/player, both via HDMI. I'm surprised and pleased how good the DVD looks. BlueRay is on the wish list for now.Yesterday my family viewed my daughter's jpg pictures of her trip to Greece on the 50PS60 via the USB jack and built-in picture viewing software. The pictures looked outstanding, and the large screen is perfect for group viewing. You can even add a music file to play while viewing pictures! [...] The set was strapped upright on a long wooden pallet. A good experience with OneCall!
