This A/V receiver replaces a 4 year old Onkyo TX-SR605. It is only two weeks since in service so I can not attest as to reliability.
    Pros:
    1. Two HDMI outputs. This is perfect for my TV/Projector setup.
    2. HDMI "Through". This works great for when I want to watch my TV straight thru from the cable box without the receiver on.
    3. The combination of the two above plus the many HDMI inputs has allowed me to simplify and eliminate component and digital audio cables. The HDMI through did not work on one of the cable channels at first, I experimented with the HDMI upconversion settings on the cable box and succeeded in being able to watch all channels without the receiver being on.
    4. Network connectivity - Connecting to the network via CAT5 was a cinch. No communication issues or problems. I can play Pandora and Internet stations without any problems. DLNA also works great for audio files. I am able to play songs from a computer on the other end of the house seamlessly.
    5. Android APP- The Onkyo Remote App works great. It is mostly a curiosity, since the unit's remote works just as well. A benefit might be to control the receiver in a dark room or from far away. There is an Iphone app also.
    6. Phono input - I still have my old Sony turntable and like to play LPs every now and then.

    Cons:
The DLNA is only good for audio. It would be great if videos could be streamed also. If anybody knows of a way to stream video I would like to know.

Other comments: I am using the receiver as 7.1. Of note: Make sure your Blue Ray player HDMI output is setup for bitstream and not PCM in order for the receiver to do the proper decoding to get TrueHD Dolby when available. Otherwise, all you will get is multichannel.
Assuming that this is a reliable unit, it is a great value for the features and price.

Easy setup and works great for Blu-ray movies. HD soundtracks sound great and the Audyssey calibration is very effective. This Onkyo runs cool and that is a definite imporvement from past Onkyo receivers. The network feature is great and so is the music file playback capability from USB. Plays high resolution FLAC files without issues from USB. I was told that the 12 V trigger output feature would work for my setup, but I found that it is only active when using zone 2. This really caused a problem in my setup since I use an external Power Amp to drive dual subwoofers. The PA requires a 12 V trigger to power up when the receiver is turned on. Also, I discovered that the zone 2 feature only works for analog sources. I can't listen to CDs or any digital music files in zone 2. This really sucks. My previous Denon receiver allowed all sources via zone 2. This makes the Onkyo really not usabel for Zone 2 operation. You basically can only play the radio over Zone 2. I feel that I was sold features that Onkyo does not have. I am sorry that I bought it.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I invested heavily in a 5.1 speaker system for my theater system and was powering them with an old Onkyo receiver for the past two years. My installer indicated when I upgrade to a new reciever, I'll likely notice a difference. I thought I had great sound...what I have now is just fantastic. Plus, it interfaces with plasm screen and other equipment so well. Even the picture is noticably better.

The onkyo was easy to set up and the device for calabrating the sound set up is fantastic. I would recommend this reciever to anyone.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I wanted to connect an older cassette recorder and an older CD recorder/player to this unit. I could only connect one or the other because there were not enough RCA jack inputs/outputs on the back of this receiver. Disappointing but still an excellent receiver for the money.

                  A:

Hello, the biggest differences are the power 135w vs. 110w per channel and the HQV Vida processor vs. the Qdeo processor for video. The 809 also has 12v trigger capability.

                  A:

Yes you would be able to use a hard drive for playback with the TX-NR709 by Onkyo. There are a few stipulations listed in the owners manual.

“USB mass storage device class (but not always guaranteed). FAT16 or FAT32 file system format. If the storage device has been partitioned, each section will be treated as an independent device. Each folder may contain up to 20,000 music files and folders, and folders may be nested up to 16 levels deep. USB hubs and USB devices with hub functions are not supported”
