I had this unit for only a year and it broke. Sony told me they would replace it for $200.

        No Audio Monitoring

        By Anonymous

Comments about Sony VBD-MA1 Multi-Function Blu-ray Disc and DVD Recorder:

Having to wait till a DVD is burned and played back elsewhere to see if your audio is messed up is really not a good workflow. My preference would be a headphone output with volume control (software or hardware). Audio meters displayed on the screen wouldn't hurt either. This would be a five star product if it had a headphone jack with volume control. RCA A/V outputs would be another way to go, but I think a headphone output would fit with the self-contained nature of this unit better. Please add in the next version! Thank you.

        Almost there

Comments about Sony VBD-MA1 Multi-Function Blu-ray Disc and DVD Recorder:

I just got the unit today, and I very happy with the overall design and layout. I wish these existed 5 years ago! There's a whole bunch of positives, but most everything has been covered already in the other reviews. The unit is actually more compact than I expected it to be from the photos, which is a perk. Plus it feels very solid, and Sony's build quality is always top notch. The only downsides I've found so far are actually pretty big issues. I can't find a way to tell the recorder that the RCA video input is 16x9 or 4x3. Most of the things I will be recording at squeezed anamorphic images, so it might not auto-detect widescreen There's no headphone jack to monitor the audio levels. And lastly, there appears to be a strange scan line along the bottom of the frame. The line might not be an issue on a TV, but on a computer monitor it's very noticeable. Other than those few quirks, I'm very happy with the unit so far. Let's hope the next generation gives monitoring options for those of us who use the analog inputs as well as memory card based burning.

        Excellent Tool

Comments about Sony VBD-MA1 Multi-Function Blu-ray Disc and DVD Recorder:

I am very happy with this burner, it produces flawless Blu-Ray Videos, i have used it with my HDR-FX1 and my HDR-XR160 as an offload device as well as a quick transfer device to Blu-Ray Disk. But I mainly use it with My computer and burn video that i edit with Vegas Studio. It works seemless with Vegas and the results are very good. If i have any complaints, i wish it was less expensive, and i wish it was multi voltage for traveling overseas, it is also a bit loud but unless you want to take a nap while you burn a disk it really is not a big problem. Over all it is a very reliable writer and i would suggest to anyone who is in the market for a good and easy to use Blu-Ray Writer.

Not compatible with some Sony Cameras

Comments about Sony VBD-MA1 Multi-Function Blu-ray Disc and DVD Recorder:

I purchased the Sony Cyber-shot HX9V and WX9 cameras for this Chrismas and was looking for a Blu-ray disc recorder to use with them. I was very disappointed to find out that the DVDirect Blu-ray Disc Recorder is not compatible with any of these cameras.
