THIS IS A GREAT CAMERA. AA BATT. ARE GREAT.

I got this camera specifically for situations where I need a high power zoom, but don't want to deal with a bulky DSLR and a long, cumbersome lens. (A DSLR would provide superior results and be a better choice if size were not a concern.) This camera is a bit chunky but the lens retracts very nicely, making it a good alternative. You won't be poking the lady in line in front of you in the kidneys with the lens on this camera, or whacking the lens against doorways and such.
The pictures are fine, plenty good enough for an advanced amateur like me. I have two gripes, however; neither would prevent me from buying this model, but both should be noted on Canon's "to improve" list. First, the LCD screen is great but if you are accustomed to using a viewfinder, like one on an SLR camera, you won't like this viewfinder. It's a mini LCD display with low resolution that's functional but anything but a pleasure to work with. If you can work with the LCD instead and hold the camera still enough at high zoom, good for you, but for me, that's hard. I need a viewfinder.
My second gripe is that Canon designed this lens to attach the hood (included) but not filters. You need to go to a third-party filter source to buy a filter adapter that clips into the lens hood groove...then attach a third party hood to that mess, as the one that comes with the camera can't be used. It can be done, I did it, but it should not be necessary. Canon should have realized that even amateurs use filters.
I splurged big time by buying the SX1 IS instead of the SX10. I still am not sure the incremental cost was worth it. You might get what you need from the SX10. (But the viewfinder and filter issues are the same for that model, too.)

The camera has a very high ISO. Also, you do not have to use the normal camera batteries, you only need 4 AA batteries. The zoom is also has a wide range. I don't have to switch lens when I want to change he zoom.

Recargeable batteries a must! Also read the manual first!

Very nice camera but price is a bit of a shock for what one gets.RAW is nice touch.Rotary dial on the back is a real problem - my thumb keeps hitting it and resetting the camera.Great view screen - BIG.ZOOM is super.Do not set the ISO above 200. 100 is better.Pixelization on all others is very bad - no different from Canon S5. One would think Canon would get a little closer to their DSLRs.Video is MOV. I would have preferred AVI but...Battery and memory card are separated - different compartments. One has to buy a special adapter to put on a filter. Not a big problem but a hazzle. [@]To get the full use one needs to read the instructions - camera is just a bit different from the S5.With the 20X zoom, one can carry one camera on vacations/travel. On the back of a camel or walking in the Amazon jungle, one does not want to be switching lenses.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX1 IS 10-megapixel Digital Still Camera:
I really love my new camera, in spite of some design flaws. I took a picture of the moon with my optical and digital full out and couldn't believe the details. I could actually see the craters of the moon. I wish they had done something better with the lens cap--like attaching it so it wouldn't drop or get lost. Clipping it to the strap is not a good alternative. And when I zoom in, it takes a second or two to come into focus; and then for only a second before losing focus again. This happens for both still and video. I missed a great shuttle launch because of this design flaw. Still, I am happy with my purchase and will learn to work around the less than perfect issues with it.
