I decided to purchase this lens based on the abundance of superlative reviews even knowing its high price and am very satisfied with my decision. I was able to use this for travel photography on two recent trips. While not lightweight, the l4-24 is very durable and sturdy and feels very well balanced on my D200. Also with the 1.5x crop factor, this lens becomes a 21-36mm.
And its performance is as advertised. Not surprisingly, you get excellent color, sharpness, great consistent picture quality at all focal lengths. Fast and quiet focus too. Read any expert-written reviews in print or on the web for more details.
The only true area for improvement is the adequate but somewhat flimsy-fitting lens hood. And maybe the zoom and focus rings could have a tighter feel, but I am reaching here...
I could only imagine how much better this lens would be on the D3 or D700, but I am more than satisfied with the results on the D200. To me, it's well worth the asking price.
