I was looking for a replacement for my XBR4, and was pleased to see that the price for this set had come down to a very reasonable level. The picture is just beautiful--great blacks for an LCD, very clear picture. I was surprised by how clear the sound was from the TV's own speakers. The only triluminos TV available at the time of purchase, and one of gizmodo's "five best" nearly 2 years after its release. Blacks are very black, and the colors are warm and sharp. It lacks the sort of "blazing" quality that you see on the samsung LED TVs, but I think that's grating on the eyes after a while and produces a deceptive illusion of sharpness.

My wife had been concerned that the speaker design would look like dumbo ears but it's very unobtrusive in real life and she actually likes the design in person, and the speakers sound great.

I bought this TV after the price dropped from $4K to $2K. The picture is great. I went to a Sony store and compared this in person with the newer 2010 models and I thought this one had a better picture. I've had the TV for about a month, and I still think "Man, that's a great picture" every time I watch it.
I really have no complaints. I thought the setup was easy, both physically (I'm using the stand) and electronically/feature wise.

Great TV that works well in a bright room. The color is beautiful right out of the box. It takes two to set it up. I also installed A SONY BDP-S560 Blu-ray Player with HDMI cables for the TV and the Blu-ray. Very easy connections using the Quick set up guide to attach to the DVR cable box. My condo is pretty much floor to ceiling windows with full on sunlight for most of the day. So the glare factor was a huge concern of mine. The Sony Bravia handles is it like a champ and I am able to view my shows even in the middle of the day.

The set up was simple (as these things go). The picture quality and sound are superb.

The only downside that I have found is that the TV remote control was apparently designed pre-BluRay so I was not able to link my Sony BluRay "power" function to the main remote. However, once the BluRay is powered on, the main remote can be used to control the BluRay, the TV and even my TivoHD. Pretty awesome, I think.

My first HD TV so overall blown away by the HD programing over basic cable and bluray movies. My only concern before buying an HDTV were problems I had seen in other sets with black levels and something called soap opera effect where it feels like you're watching a movie live on the set. As far as I've seen so far this TV does NOT have any of the problems I've seen before! My only complaint has more to do with the channels I receive from Standard Definition broadcasts. Most of these channels are very poor when compared to viewing them on a regular TV set. If you're watching these channels and hit Freeze picture, the smaller in frame picture then becomes crystal clear so I wish the TV had a way to reduce the picture size to like a 25" diagnal view. Other than that, I am very please with this purchase and so glad I spent a little extra for the local dimming backlighting. Thank you to Onecall too for being the few left to still carry this set and offering it at a good price!

This is a great LED LCD TV. I was not impressed with the one at a well known electronics store, probably wasn't setup or the video being shown wasn't ideal to show off the TV's stellar picture quality. I took the plunge based on the CNET reviews and other reviews I was able to find on the internet. I have it connected to a Sony Blu-ray player and a Sony receiver. The TV was great right out of the box. There are so many settings but the default ones are good places to start. Looks like most TV makers are moving towards edge LED rather than array because of the thin screen craze but I was not buying the TV to look at how thin it is but the picture quality. Now that the price has gone down significantly, the TV is more than worth it.

I am another person who blindly purchased this set and had a bit of buyers remorse after spending waaaay too much on a tv that I really didnt plan on doing. Sony has produced a great LCD TV. The Triluminous technology is a clear step forward for LCD picture quality. The unfortunate result is a great TV at a price point that many people will not be able to afford. Even now 18 months after introduction this set is still selling new above the price points of the two succeeding XBR (9 & 10) models. During my shopping efforts I had the opportunity to view this LCD side-by-side with a competing plasma and was convinced that the XBR8 can achieve black levels on par with "reference" plasmas. For those tech enthusiasts out there, I dropped in a HD video benchmark Blu-ray disc and to my surprise the test patterns were at ideal levels/setting out of the box when picture was set to "Cinema". If you want to tweak any of the picture settings, you will find a plethora of video adjustment options in the settings menu. This should provide the flexibility to accommodate the needs of even the most discerning viewers. The HDMI CEC connectivity (which Sony has branded BRAVIA Sync), is a convenient feature that enables you to network your HDMI devices together. Mostly it avoids having to individually power on each device or fiddle with input settings when going from TV to Blu-ray. The only real drawback is the limited on-line internet functionality. If connected to a TIVOHD you will have an an alternative to access online content (Netflix, Youtube, etc.) that the XBR8 otherwise wouldn't. For those who can get their hands on one of these units and afford the price you will be pleased with this LCD.

Simply put, this is the best LCD television that you can buy. Finally, at set that's good enough to replace my Sony Trinitron KD-34XBR960 tube set. You will not find a set with better contrast or color thanks to the local dimming, tri-color backlight. You also aren't likely to find a set with better built-in sound. What's truly amazing is that One Call is selling these at half price [...] The XBR8 is discontinued and One Call has the only remaining stock. Nothing in the current Sony lineup can match this set. This replaced a first gen Sony 36 XBR. I spent about 6 months doing research on LED backlit LCD's. I had always been apprehensive about going LCD and wanted Plasma. After reading reviews and putting my own eye's on my choices it came down to the XBR8 as the best overall.

It has beautiful colors and the black levels are nearly identical to the plasma set I wanted originally. Super fast motion (minor issues with blocking and such) is a weakpoint but that is so minor I only mention it so that there is some balance to my praise of the excellent quality in workmanship and technology. The set far outperforms the newer XBR9. The local-dimming RGB LED backlight is the superior way to go. No fancy magic - just well executed - great performing.

The 46 at its cost point is a tremendous value when compared to larger models from other manufacturers. Why would anyone want a larger, lower quality picture when you could have a gorgeous set like the XBR8 line?

It is a little heavy so be sure to have a friend handy if you ever need to move it safely. Not as thin as newer lines or other brands but with proper back-lighting you have to expect that.

My only disappointment is the "blocking" that is evident in the picture during rapid panning sequences. Absolutely GREAT blacks! With all the lights turned off in a home theater/dark room, you cant see the edge of the screen when the credits roll on a black background. Easy setup with the included stand (though you'll need 2 people for a TV this bulky). My only complaint is that the TV does not pass DTS sound signals from an HDMI input (sony blu-ray player) to the TV optical audio output (sony 6.1 reciever). All that the TV can pass through is Dolby Surround, NOT discrete channel encoding. Not a huge deal, but for optimal audio quality, it means hooking the BluRay player to both the TV and the Reciever and changing the reciever input settings every time I switch between TV viewing and BluRay/DVD viewing. If my reciever had HDMI inputs, this problem would probably go away.

I bought this Flatpanel TV for the reviews on color performance with the LED bcaklight. What surprised me was the great black-to-white extinction ratio. Can't say enoigh about the color performance, especially the bright red colors. No CCFL backlight can compare. Just wish there was a simplier way to connect our Mac Book Pro to view movies from Hulu. FYI, the Mac Book Pro also has LED backlight and works great, but I prefer the larger Sony screen.

Spent much time deciding to by this TV. Best PICTURE. Great SOUND. Good Price from ONE CALL. I had a plasma before and this new Sony provides the same LIFE LIKE picture, just a little crisper. TV sound is very adequate, especially when utilizing the simulated surround sound option. I am a sports nut. Baseball, Hockey, Football, Golf, you name it, I watch it. This TV makes the whole experience that much better.

Great TV - Sony also has a 240 Hz model, but not with LED LCD capability. If you want to buy one now, you will not be disappointed. If you wait, look for a possible merging of LED LCD tech with a 240 Hz refresh rate in the future.

This Sony with "local dimming" through the use of an LED back-lighting array is a clear winner. No other LED set approaches the Sony for true blacks or for resolution. The only thing better than the 46-inch version is the 55-inch version of this set. The OneCall price puts the 46XBR8 within the reasonable price range. If you are considering the purchase of an HD TV, don't fail to include the Sony in your short list.

This TV may be discontinued soon, but it is a fantastic TV for the money. Unlike many of its competitors, the Sony Bravia Engine 2 Pro upconvets all inputs to display them in 1080p. Unlike many new large-screen TVs with small down-firing speakers on the bottom, this one has great sound as a stand-alone set. Side speakers are ideal for this. Also, this TV has a fine built-in subwoofer hidden in the bottom of the TV, providing extraordinary bass for a TV set. I would challenge anyone to find better sound without the use of a separate surround sound system.

Without a doubt, the best LCD TV I've seen. I had heard complaints about off-angle viewing being less than acceptable, but I've found that it's no worse than any other LCD. In fact, it's better than quite a few others I've spent some time with. Overall, it's a great TV if you're willing to drop the cash for it.
