(based on 88 ratings)
Brand: Marantz
Located in: HOME THEATER, DVD Players and Recorders, Single Disc DVD Player
The DV4001 is more than just a DVD player: It handles movie DVDs, CDs (and their -R and -RW cousins), VCDs, MP-3 and WMA music discs, and JPEG-format photo discs, too!

It delivers high image quality thanks to true progressive scan, an all-digital HDMI output, and internal scaling so you can really see the difference with whatever monitor you`re using. You`ll also appreciate the flutter-free movie reproduction provided by the 3:2 pulldown circuitry. There`s also PAL <-> SECAM conversion for true world-wide compatibility.

Sound quality is Marantz-standard, whether you choose stereo or multi-channel analog or coaxial or optical digital outputs. Conveniences range from on-screen display through parental control to front-panel menu operation. The remote controller fits your hand perfectly.

Marantz's three-year warranty provides peace of mind. And you`ve chosen a Marantz. You can`t get better than that.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

This player runs a slideshow in my office. It runs 24/7, it's been going for 6 months now and the quality of the picture is as good as when new. The normal DVD player will last about 3-4 months at this rate, this player is superior to any other model I have used.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

This is a nice DVD player, with obvious quality, a good picture, and overall it is quite easy to use. But it has a few features I don't care for: (1) It is VERY slow to load. (2) I'm not having much luck with the "memory" feature, i.e., when I stop a movie halfway through, then resume watching the next day, the DVD player does not "remember" where the movie was, and starts over at the beginning. I know the owner's manual says the DVD player has this "memory" capability, but it sure doesn't work for me. (3) The Fast Forward max speed is 32X; it would really be nice if it could go 64X if not 128X.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

I've had other Marantz products and all have been reliable, durable and obviously well constructed. This DVD player fits the same mold. So far it has handled well all the disc types I have tried as it has claimed. Some have complained about the slow loading. Maybe it's on the slow side but this is no problem at all. Don't let this affect your decision to buy.

High quality design. It works, unlike other inexpensive models I've gone through in the last few years. No color bleeding, occassionally freezes with burned and scratched dvd's, but so far always resumes after a few seconds.

It's an attractive, and well built player with a quality picture,(and a "region free" code available on the web), so the bones are excellent . Just a few little niggles ; if it's sleeping pressing the eject button wont wake it , it takes 20 seconds once woken to begin ejecting, the remote has chapter skip and forward scan on one button- and i hate the home screen picture, but little irritations aside a pretty good device.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

I've had a Marantz CD changer for nearly a decade, and it's a great sounding machine that is well made and reliable. My famous brand DVD player conked out after just a year. So I needed something new. When this Marantz DVD player crossed my path at a very reasonable price, I had to give it a try. I've had it only a month, but it's worked great so far--super quality, super picture. You can tell it's well made by the weight--notably more solid than the little tin boxes that most DVD players are. I'm not giving it 5 stars because it's just too soon to rate it that high.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

It just seems unresponsive. I press "open" and nothing happens. I have to do it one or more times before it opens. The unresponsiveness makes it very awkward to use. I only bought it because it had a high user rating. Also, it is irritating that there is no clock when it is off. I had become very used to that and assumed all DVD players would have it.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

It plays everything well. I've played music (CD, MP3, WMA, etc), DVDs, DivX, AVI, MP4, etc on it.
I am using my TV (standard tube) for both audio and video (I am using the standard RCA connections to the TV). I noticed a quality increase in the sound when I installed this device. DVDs seem to be the same but the quality of other video formats seems to be better. Even better than direct connection to my computer through S-Video with supported formats.

You can't ask for much more than the Marantz DV-4001 gives you. If pressed, I'd say that I wished it upscaled to 1080p, but at it's purchase price I just can't complain.

Quality is good enough to put off getting Blu-Ray until prices come down a bit.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

I got this primarily because it has the capability to play discs from other regions (though this has to be "hacked"). The hack was easy and the display is very good. It is working so far (2 months+).
The picture quality on a 22" 720p TV is about as good as one would want -- though the upscaling doesn't really compare with blueray on a 1080 set.
It is an excellent buy as a no frills DVD player.

Can't get it to work with SR4002
By RichardVerified Purchaser from North Charleston, SC on 7/3/2009
Best Uses:
Home Theater
Describe Yourself:
Casual User

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

Purchased this because I had purchased the SR4002, and thought it would be a perfect match. Hooked it up and had picture but no sound.
Called Marantz and was told it was because of a incompatibility with HDMI and our Samsung LN40B530 40" TV, and that the receiver needed to have an update done to make things right.
I had to send the receiver off to have this done. The tech called me and asked about the problem. He said, "I don't know why they told you to send it to us, because this isn't going to solve the problem", and he was right.
The long and short of this story is, it won't work with our setup. Was told by the tech that we could use HDMI for Picture and Optical for sound, but what's the point of that?
Funny thing is I can hook-up our Sony 5 disk DVD player through HDMI and don't have any issues at all. I'm confused, and a bit peeved, over this situation.
Now it's time to get back on the phone to Marantz. I'm not holding my breath though!

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

I mainly use this player to play concert DVDs. Audio goes through a Marantz home theater system; AV 600 Preamp; DP 870 Digital Processor; five MA 700 amplifiers; Bose 901s for front L+R & L&R surrounds; B&W CC6 center channel; & twin 12" subs. Video goes into a 55" Mitsubishi HDTV. The picture quality is the best I've seen. It is even better than my Mitsubishi DD-8050 DVD player or any of the half dozen others I own. The surround sound can knock pictures off the walls with no distortion.
The price I paid to OneCall for this unit was unbeatable.
My only complaint is that the unit's power must be turned 'on' before any functions will work. On most of my other players I can press 'play' or 'open/close' with the power off and the unit will respond. But this is only a minor inconvenience.
I would recommend this player to anyone who is not yet ready to make the switch to Blue Ray.

The sound from the CDs is crystal clear and I notice a definite improvement when watching movies. I highly recommend this product.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

I have the player attached to a 1970's receiver and new Sony speakers. The sound is great, DVD play quality is great. The remote is ridiculously huge, and the player takes a very long time to open and turn on. I usually turn it on, then walk away to do something (to keep myself from getting irritated about how long it's taking to turn on), and then come back and put the cd in. For the price, it's fine, but that one feature makes it really irritating to use.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

The DV4001 will work for a two-channel music enthusiast who prefers vinyl LPs and needs a very good CD/DVD player to deliver CD sound and HDTV DVD playback. This unit could work well in a second, less used system for a true audiophile. At a discount price, it's got to be a top option for these buyers. This unit works well with the Marantz PM7001. I'd bet the Marantz CD5001 is slightly better for CD playback, but only slightly. Actually, the bass from the DV4001 can seem accurate yet dominating with certain amps and interconnects.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

I bought this product to play my wife's Russian PAL format movies. Being a film buff, I've managed to burn through 5 Sony DVD players, 2 Samsung, 2 XBOXs, and a Playstation 3. This is by far the best player for regular DVD's. Marantz lives up to its praised name brand with superior picture and audio quality. You must hold skip chapter button to fast-forward, causing you to accidentally skip to next chapter. Slow load time. Otherwise, a sound investment you'll be proud to showcase instead of constantly replace.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

This DVD player has everything that really matters: excellent audio (192kHz/24bit DAC) and video (108Mhz/12bit DAC), PAL to/from NTSC conversion, progressive scan with 3:2 pull-down and HDMI output with upscaling to 1080i or 720p, discrete IR commands, RS232 port for control, MP3, WM, JPEG HD, VCD 2.0 and DVIX Ultra support. It is quiet and has an slim profile. On top of all this there is a hack to make it multi-region, when hacked it can play any DVD from anywhere in the world, not only NTSC but also PAL ones. It doesn't get any better at this price.

6. No optical output.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

My first experience with Marantz was in the early 1960s as my first component stereo stystem was a Marantz and it's quality was excellent. Thus, when I found this DVD player by Marantz for the price, I wondered if their quality of product had changed. The answer is clearly "no." It is easy to use and the quality of picture and sound is excellent for the purposes I use it for.

Comments about Marantz DV4001 Progressive Scan DVD Player:

The Marantz DV4001 is a well made high quality unit. I have two and use one for DVD's in a home theater and the other for CD music playback. The quality of the DA and analog audio circuits makes this about as good a CD player as you can get without going with ultra high cost separates. The heavier construction of this unit (it weighs two to three times what most DVD players do!) means that it does not suffer from sonic vibrations as many lesser DVD players do when playing audio CD's. It is a little slower then most DVD players to read, load, and eject discs, but that is really a nit when you consider the higher overall quality of the unit and of the picture and sound it produces. One thing, invest in high quality interconnect cables! The ones shipped with this DVD player are really not up to this unit's performance. Also, if you have other Marantz DVD players, you will find that the remotes will work with this one. I have two DV4001's and three other Marantz DVD players and all the remotes work for all the players. These players can also be controlled via a receiver. Oh, be careful to have the little switch on the back set to "int" if you are using the unit as a stand alone. If you don't set this switch correctly, the remote will not work and no front panel switches will work. This unit has a lot of features so reading the owner's manual is a must! Marantz builds high quality stuff, but it is in no way idiot proof.
