(based on 85 ratings)
Brand: Onkyo
Located in: HOME THEATER, Receivers
The TX-SR806 occupies a unique position in the Onkyo line-up.We class it as a mid-range A/V receiver. But with its advanced capabilities and THX Ultra2 Plus certification, it`s a worthy challenger for high-end status. Built with high-definition entertainment in mind, the TX-SR806 accommodates up to five HDMI™ sources that can handle both 1080p video and studio master-quality surround sound. That`s more high-def sources than you`ll find on any other Onkyo A/V receiver. If that weren`t enough, onboard Faroudja DCDi Cinema™ scales all standard definition sources to 1080p for HDMI output, or to 1080i for component video output. Endowed with the amplification power and dependability expected from an Onkyo A/V receiver, the TX-SR806 stands out as a natural choice for high performance home theater.

Comments about Onkyo TX-SR806 Black 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I replaced a Harmon/Kardon AVR 340 without HDMI switching and this is AWESOME! We use it in our living room home theater setup.

It has ample power and the setup is easy compared to some of the other receivers I've set up in the past. It is nice to have all of the connections in one place so we don't have to change the TV input.

I like the fact that you can watch video on an input and audio from another. Ex-Play PS3 via HDMI and listen to a record using the Phono input. (I may be the only person to do this.)

The only real complaint is that it does run a little hotter than I would like, so make sure you have plenty of room overhead in your rack.

Great receiver for the money Onkyo does there job right. Sound is great but 2007 Model 805 is better in sound quality. Without THX Ultra 2Plus it only wins in the HDMI connections and video upconversion. Onkyo TX SR805 Sound Better overall.

I have used this receiver for two months in my new home theater and am very pleased. Some of the complaints were about running hot and difficulty to set up. My placement allows for good airflow so no heating issues. In terms of set up, I have always used Onkyo and am accustomed to their setup process so no issues there. The Audessy mic makes it easy to get the speakers to sound great. All in all, I am very pleased.

Comments about Onkyo TX-SR806 Black 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I purchased the Onkyo 806 as the hub for my home theatre system- a Samsung BD1400 Blue-Ray running 1080P, a DirectTV high-def receiver running slightly under 1080I, through the Onkyo to a Samsung 5271 1080P 120Hz LCD display. For the audio end of things, I have a complete set of Klipsch Reference Series handling the duty. While I only needed to run the Blue-Ray "through", I was looking to upconvert the DirectTV receiver to enhance the picture quality via the Onkyo's onboard processor, which has worked out well. I have a problem with the Audyssey automatic equalization- the curve it set up is exremely bass heavy, to the point of being obnoxious. This may be an issue with the Klipsch speakers, as they are extremely efficient, and the EQ software might have been designed with a more typical speaker in mind. Manually programming the curve should take care of the issue, but renders the auto setup useless in this particular case. I initially had a problem with the video conversion card after sixty hours or so of burn-in time. I returned the unit to One Call with absolutely no hassles (they paid the return [...]). [...] will recommend One Call to my friends with no worries. Since receiving the replacement unit we have logged about two hundred hours of run time, with no issues. The unit is very well made, and visually complements our other equipment. I am pleased with the clarity, power, and depth of the sound.

It has enough power to drive my Polk Audio RTi70s loudly (and my wife crazy in the process).

I had an Onkyo 700 years ago and was not happy with the power it had but the 806 receiver is beast. It is too loud at times, especially on DTS-MA soundtracks.

I'm now on my second 806. the first on died on me after about 2-3 weeks. I really like the unit, but time will tell.... hopefully the first one was just an "unlucky" bad one. if #2 keeps going, then the 806 is super! Chad at One Call was great about helping with the problem.

Comments about Onkyo TX-SR806 Black 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I love being able to process audio through HDMI cable, and upconvert all video sources through the 1080p monitor output including great on screen menuing.

The volume adjustment is very fine so it takes a while to change volume on the knob or remote, but that is tolerable because it does allow finer volume adjustments. I've had h/k's highest end receivers for last 27 years, and frankly I think I made a good move to Onkyo. I'm impressed.

Comments about Onkyo TX-SR806 Black 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

This is an awesome receiver, especially considering the price/value perspective. No one comes close to offering the same power, features, and audio integrity in its class. I am not an audiophile, but I do have the appreciation and discerment for music and home theater - there's nothing wanting on this machine. I bought this to replace a 12 year old Onkyo - the THX, HDMI, and zone 2 features won me over again; and the price from OneCall was too good to pass up - sealed the deal.
I was a bit apprehensive about the reviews that said it was hard to set up, but I did not find it to be so. The microphone/auto-balancing was way cool - extra long cord was enough to reach my equipment housed in a closet removed from my living room. On-screen menus were a snap to navigate through. Incredible flexibilty and variety of listening venues - I still haven't sorted them all out (I guess that's the "difficult set up" part).
Small downsides - (1) it does run hot - 7x130 watts will do that; (2) I was expecting more from the remote - it did not learn all features from the copied equipment - it got the basics from my DVD and Cable DVR, but still have to reach for the orginal one for program guide, fast-forward, etc. But in a heartbeat would heartily recommend to anyone wanting a quality receiver still priced in the 3-figure range.

I've only had product for about a month but very pleased with ease of setup, and loved automatic speaker tuning to your room. This has plenty of hdmi inputs and all work great. I have a Xbox 360, PS3, HD Dish DVR, and DVD recorder hooked up to hit through HDMI and there's no problems. I have had this unit for a month and the sound is great, with plenty of power. The remote controls everything except for the game systems. I think this is the best receiver you can buy for this price range. ONecall has the best price out there, even better than a "going out of business sell" [...]. This outperformed my previous Pioneer and Sony receivers. I was a little skeptical about earlier reviews of dots on the screen when you hook it up to a game system, throught hdmi. But there is no problems. I would recommend banana plug connectors for speaker connections it makes it so much easier to connect and disconnect. It does run a lil hot but as long as you don't have it on 24/7, you'll be okay.

I have been a long time fan of Onkyo, but I have never had the opportunity to buy products in this part of their product line-up. (Champagne taste on a beer budget) This reciever offers a great feature set for a great price thanks to OneCall. I always do a lot of research before I buy as I dont get to buy very often. This reciever gives me the flexibility to do everything I need it to. Great clarity at all volume levels so far. Menus are intuitive and well explained in the manual. Upconversion looks very nice and is super conveinient. Audessey set up was amazing. . . Straight out of the box, I had a pretty significant dead spot in the middle of my listening area. After I ran the setup, I got rich full sound throughout. You wont find this set of features at this price point from anyone else.

Comments about Onkyo TX-SR806 Black 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I waited to make a decision on this reciever after reading on the net about the 806's problems; when I got it I found there are none. Easy to set up, dynamic sound and yes it gets a little warm but not as hot as some say; no more than my Onkyo 600 which the 806 replaced. I love this reciever for it's sound and the fact you can assign your blu ray to show on the receiver front when playing as well as any component you have hooked up. Don't let these internet stories scare you as they did me. There are no blue dots while playing blu-ray or dvd, great sound and yes a little warmth but nothing from stopping you from playing it all day as I do without worry.

Upgraded from the TX-SR606 for the added power and pre-amp outs. For the money, hard to beat. HDMI switching is ultra convenient asnd the TrueHD decoding is phenomenal. Will change the way you enjoy a movie. *Note - be sure you set the speaker resistance level (ohms) accordingly. It does make a difference, especially if you like to crank it up.

I purchased the Receiver for home theater and some
music listening. The installation was very easy but the programing needs to be simpler so the people that are not technically inclined can install it and set it up. The size is good, however be aware that it might not fit in your entertainment table/center and be aware of the space you give it, because the Receiver gets very hot! They should install a cooling fan so when you play say a movie 2 hours long the Receiver should not have to be turned off after, but other then that it works great!

Comments about Onkyo TX-SR806 Black 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

Onkyo TX-SR 806 is a good compromise between the entry level 7.1 channel systems and the more expensive audiophile high end equipment. I purchased it primarily for 5.1 classical SACDs and have not been disappointed. Sound is excellent, all i could ask for in my smallish listening room. Haven't tried it for home theatre yet. Coupling it with Oppo SACD/DVD player and Sony BluRay. [...]The surround sound is really an experience, 3-D listening. Try Mahler or Berlioz Requiem to see what's capable of. Good, clean solid power of 130w/ch. Still getting used to controls and features. Since this is my first foray into this type of system, I'm pretty impressed.

this is an amazing unit. the hdmi works perfectly. I have 4 inputs and 1 output to the tv. the clutter is gone! I was most impressed that the unit comes with a mic that sends sound waves through the room to adjust the sound to your room. I was amazed at how my system sounds now. I have polk audio rti 12 speakers which have 7 drivers each, this system rocks them with power to spare. I paid about 5oo.oo for this, and would pay twice that for the unit. this is a awesome reciever, don't buy a cheap one, only to find you should have bought this one. I am very please. this is very easy to set up, but, it did take a little time to do. take your time, your ears will appreciate your work for years to come! thanks onecall!

I replaced my Pioneer VSX-9700S (900w), Bose AM-5,301,101 I purchased in 1991 with the 806, DV-CP706 with AM-16 speakers. I ordered an extra cube from Bose to complete surround R/L. The RIHD syncs DVD sound from any format (5.1, 6.1, PL, THx)automatically. The sound is crystal clear at -35 db to +2 db (which shakes my house). I have been listening to remastered CD's (SaCD quality) of late 1960's - 1970's LP's which sound beautiful! Don't be afraid of 130 watts, better quality of sound at low volumes.

I must admit that I am partial to onkyo since I have over the years purchased many of their products. As with all previous purchases I love their quality, styling and durability. Comments about Onkyo TX-SR806 Black 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I have a Sony 5.1 receiver, that this Onkyo replaces and the difference is like night and day! The sound is crisp! Like being there! I swear, sometimes I feel like someone is sneaking up behind me, when the 7.1 surround is on and I am playing a game, like World at War! It just does not get any better than this! And the almost limitless variety of sound modes, from THX to Church musc! You can't miss with this Receiver! I especialy like how you can hook up all your compononts and then they are processed, not just for audio, but for video and everything is up graded to 1080P right through the receiver! Put away your remotes, because you can use this Receivers remote, to control everything! It even has a "learn mode", so you can teach it how to control your other remotes! I gave this Onkyo receiver, 5 stars, because the complicated set up process, for me, took about 3 days to master and then, YAHOO! I was set up! Thanks for listening. P.S. I am still learning about all the wonderful features, Onkyo, has built into this high class Receiver! So, buy one and join me on the "learning curve"!

I bought this one instead of the lesser models, simply because it seemed like a happy medium betwen price and performance. This A/V is wicked sweet and it seems to be doing well in my Novia BDI entertainment center.

This is a very nice unit once it is set up. I had to have assistance from my engineer brother-in-law to help with setup since it is NOT straight-forward, even with the manual. The documentation could be a bit more detailed for set up. A couple very subtle setup changes MUST be made for the system to begin working. Also, the unit runs really hot so make sure to have sufficient air circulation around and behind the unit. If it is placed in a cabinet, you might consider installing a small fan at the back to enhance circulation, which is what I have done.

Per the title, this is a great unit for the price. It's a piece of cake to setup, has 5 hdmi in, and all the advanced audio modes you could possibly want. It's sound is perfectly fine. Considering what it has, this unit would have been an A1 top of the line receiver just a few years ago. Looking at the new top of the line units, ask yourself if you actually need all the extras or just good plain sound in one room. That fits most of us.

I've seen reviews critical of it's cooling fan setup and quite frankly I wouldn't worry about it. I have it driving all my speakers no problem. It has plenty of power to drive whatever you want unless you're a real picky audiophile.

The THX Certification and the THX settings are so worth the step up to the 806. I switched up from my Denon 5805. I love this Onkyo!!
